OUR APPROACH / INFORMED BY OFSTED

Ambitious PE.
Clear, practical teaching.

Make the learning explicit. Help every pupil take the next step.
A practical approach for teachers, grounded in PE subject guidance.

FROM GUIDANCE TO THE LESSON

Teach with purpose.
See what pupils learn.

Our lesson format connects a learning focus to practice, teacher observation and a next step. Explore the plans to see how that works for your class.

01

Curriculum and teaching

Specify what pupils will learn, model it clearly and connect new content to earlier learning.

02

Inclusion

Identify barriers and adapt support so pupils can work towards meaningful, ambitious learning.

03

Achievement

Check what pupils can demonstrate and explain, then use that information to decide what comes next.

OFSTED’S PE SUBJECT REPORT

Three connected forms of knowledge.

Ofsted’s 2023 PE report describes these forms of knowledge. We use them to make the purpose of activities easier to explain.

MOVEMENT

Motor competence

Develop and refine movement.

In our Year 2 sample: hold a stable balance, then link it to a controlled travelling action.

DECISIONS

Rules, strategies and tactics

Understand how to participate and make decisions.

In our Year 5 sample: move after passing to offer a teammate another option.

PARTICIPATION

Healthy participation

Learn to take part safely and effectively.

In our Year 4 sample: choose a sustainable pace and explain how effort changes.

WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE

A clear purpose behind every plan.

Precise learning goals

Each lesson names the intended learning and what success looks like, so the activity has a clear purpose.

Practice before complexity

Recall prompts and repeated practice help teachers revisit learning before adding challenge.

Assessment that informs teaching

Observe the skill being taught, address misconceptions and adjust the next task.

Specific support for SEND

Practical adaptations offer starting points for responding to individual needs while retaining the learning focus.

RECEPTION HAS ITS OWN STARTING POINT

Build the foundations through movement and play.

Our Reception sequence uses an EYFS physical development lens, with modelling, exploration and opportunities to practise. It is not a KS1 lesson brought forward. Teachers can adapt it to children’s starting points and wider provision.

CLEAR ABOUT OUR CLAIMS

Ofsted-informed. Teacher-led.

We reference the school inspection toolkit in use from September 2026 alongside the PE subject report. The toolkit includes curriculum and teaching, inclusion and achievement; it does not require schools to create special paperwork for inspection.

The prototype demonstrates a lesson format. The library now contains 273 draft lessons: 39 for each year group, with six six-lesson units and three consolidation lessons per year. This is one weekly lesson, not a complete timetable entitlement. Specialist review and wider curriculum mapping remain in development; swimming and water safety are not included. MotionNest PE is independent and is not approved or endorsed by Ofsted; purchasing resources cannot guarantee an inspection outcome.
